Anime About Social Struggles and Finding Friends

The term “hikikomori” is frequently encountered in the world of anime. It describes individuals who face significant difficulties in social interaction, often withdrawing from others, sometimes to the point of staying completely confined to their homes. In Japan, this phenomenon is so relevant that it has served as the inspiration, to varying degrees, for many creative works. This article presents a selection of anime series whose protagonists are actively trying to overcome their fears in order to socialize and build friendships.

Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui! (WataMote)

School hallway chats during breaks, after-school hangouts, shopping trips, and other typical teenage experiences are completely foreign to Tomoko Kuroki. The protagonist of this comedy anime, “It`s Not My Fault That I`m Not Popular!”, struggles profoundly with communication. The anime portrays this struggle with considerable hyperbole, and the character`s detachment from the real world sometimes appears wildly unrealistic. However, it effectively captures how these situations often feel to people plagued by insecurity.

Tomoko Kuroki boasts hundreds of successful dates – but only within the realm of dating simulators. While her real life is devoid of both friendships and romantic relationships, she remains convinced that everything will change any moment now. In reality, this high school student can barely manage to utter a few words. Tomoko`s communication skills are practically non-existent, and applying her vast experience from dating sims to real-life interactions proves far from easy. Adding to her challenges are persistent dark circles under her eyes and the unsettling expressions she frequently makes, which hardly make her approachable to those around her.

So, how does she intend to make friends or find a boyfriend? How can she break through the barrier and start speaking openly with people? How can she begin to live in reality? As the saying goes, recognizing the problem is half the battle. Tomoko Kuroki is doing everything in her power to socialize. Even if her attempts are often unconventional and clumsy, the crucial thing is that she doesn`t give up!

Bocchi the Rock!

Can a hobby or a passion truly transform someone`s life? Can it make them universally beloved or simply the life of the party? Hitori Gotō, the main character of the anime “Bocchi the Rock!”, can barely string a sentence together, avoids eye contact, and spends her days isolated, often hiding inside her closet. That`s where she feels safe and comfortable, but…

Since childhood, Hitori has dreamed of having friends to have fun with and perform on stage. She`s been playing the guitar for three years but hasn`t managed to form a band, play at the school festival, or achieve fame. Although, wait, perhaps things aren`t so bad with the last point. After all, she has 30,000 subscribers on YouTube, even if they don`t know the face of their favorite guitarist. Hitori`s only friend is her guitar, and her bedroom serves as her stage. This is how our protagonist became a recluse. Her gaze is dull, filled with loneliness and despair, with no hope for a brighter future. It`s not as if Hitori isn`t trying. She carries her guitar everywhere, pins her favorite bands` badges on her bag, and requests songs during school breaks. All this is in an attempt to find friends with similar interests. But is that really how you find them?

Yet, sometimes miracles happen! Unexpectedly, a girl approaches Hitori and asks her to play with her band. Oh, and yes, the performance is *today*! Her moment in the spotlight has arrived; the main thing is not to mess it up! And even if she does, she shouldn`t lose hope.

Welcome to the N.H.K. (N.H.K. ni Youkoso!)

If you`re convinced that all your misfortunes are the result of someone`s malicious intent, or even a full-blown conspiracy, it`s time to stop living in fantasies and return to reality. The protagonist of the anime “Welcome to the N.H.K.”, 22-year-old Tatsuhiro Sato, doesn`t work, doesn`t study, and avoids all social contact. In short, he is a true recluse, or hikikomori.

Tatsuhiro isn`t just too lazy to leave the house; he`s genuinely afraid. He perceives a mysterious conspiracy, believing that someone is deliberately causing him and thousands of others to become hikikomori. Poor grades in school, difficulties at work, lack of money, the creation of appealing media and delicious food – he sees all of it as a trap designed to prevent people from living normal lives. He believes it`s all the work of an organization called N.H.K. But how can he fight it? How can he stop being a recluse?

By chance, the main character meets a mysterious girl. She proposes that he participate in a special project aimed at helping hikikomori recover and reintegrate into society.

Aharen Is Indecipherable (Aharen-san wa Hakarenai)

If you feel like no one understands you, perhaps you just haven`t found your person yet. The main characters of the comedy anime “Aharen Is Indecipherable” were both lonely before they met each other. And so, two peculiar introverts crossed paths. Raidō Matsuboshi struggles to make friends due to his intimidating appearance and stern gaze. His deskmate, Reina Aharen, initially pushes people away with overly pushy behavior, so she tries to restrain herself. Few people would welcome excessive familiarity and hugs on the first day of meeting. But Matsuboshi isn`t overly bothered by this. Although he finds Aharen difficult to understand, he tries his best to befriend her, accepting all her quirks and strange habits.

The anime is full of amusing and awkward situations that are sure to elicit laughter. The characters constantly surprise and shock with their eccentricities, becoming closer to each other with each episode. These two are always on their own wavelength, often perplexing those around them. But who cares, as long as you and your friend are truly having fun and enjoying your time together?

Handa-kun

Low self-esteem can significantly hinder the ability to make friends, build relationships, and generally thrive in society. The protagonist of the anime “Handa-kun”, Seishu Handa, is the son of a renowned calligrapher. The young man himself is already famous for his talents in this art. While he excels creatively, he is completely inept when it comes to interacting with people and understanding their feelings and emotions.

He interprets fan letters as death wishes or threats, and sees only anger and malice in the admiring glances of his classmates. Handa believes everyone around him hates him, but he couldn`t be more mistaken. The character has become a local celebrity and the object of widespread adoration. However, this fact simply doesn`t register with Handa himself. Fortunately, his cheerful and outgoing classmates don`t give up trying to reach Handa and build a friendship with him.

Komi Can`t Communicate (Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu)

The main character of the anime “Komi Can`t Communicate” doesn`t spend hours gaming, isn`t obsessed with anime, and doesn`t stay home constantly, yet she has extreme difficulty interacting with people. Socialization, chatting with friends, saying good morning – none of that is in Komi`s repertoire. It`s simply not her world.

The protagonist freezes up when anyone speaks to her, trembles with fear, and can`t find anything to say, all while appearing incredibly cool. Somehow, she manages to make a strong impression on everyone around her without uttering a single word. Thanks to her beauty and stoic expression, she`s become a local celebrity, but in reality, the girl is very lonely. Her deskmate, Hitohito Tadano, notices Komi`s hidden struggles and offers to help her make friends, but…

Komi thinks that others hate her. Every day she tries to speak to someone, but her voice fails her again and again. What should she even talk about? How does she smile? How does she say hello? What if this loneliness lasts forever? What should she do? Well, what else? She has one friend now, and that`s Tadano. He`s the one who will help her find others and teach her how to communicate.
