Nintendo has decided to discontinue the use of cartridges for certain games released on the Nintendo Switch 2. The company shared details of this new approach on their official website.
Going forward, some games will be available only in digital format. Gamers will still have the option to buy a physical box of the title; however, it will not contain a game cartridge. Instead, buyers will receive an activation cartridge, which will allow them to download the game from the online store. Additionally, the packaging will include instructions on how to install the game. Each time the game is launched, the key cartridge will need to be inserted into the console.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for release on June 5th. Previously, the company announced its pricing policy for games. For instance, some titles will be priced at $70, but Mario Kart World will be the first game to cost $80 for the standard edition. Physical cartridge versions, when available, will start at $90.
