Bill Gates Pledges $200 Billion Fortune to Charity by 2045

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has announced his intention to donate virtually his entire fortune, currently estimated at around $200 billion, to philanthropic causes. He plans to accelerate the sale of his personal assets and channel these vast resources to help those in need through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation over the next two decades. Gates shared this significant decision in a recent communication.

“When I die, people will say many different things about me, but I`m determined that `he died rich` will not be one of them. There are too many urgent problems to solve to hold onto resources that could be used to help people,” Gates stated. He added that this resolution solidified during a period of reflection, coinciding with several important personal and professional milestones this year, including the foundation`s 25th anniversary, what would have been his father`s 100th birthday (his father helped establish the foundation), Microsoft`s 50th anniversary, and his own 70th birthday in October.

Over $100 billion has already been contributed to the Gates Foundation since its inception 25 years ago, primarily through donations from Gates`s personal wealth and substantial support from investor Warren Buffett. Gates outlined ambitious future plans, stating, “Over the next two decades, we plan to double our donations.”

Gates explained that before establishing the philanthropic foundation, he undertook extensive research into global challenges, a practice he employs with any major new undertaking. He ultimately decided to focus on combating diseases, adopting a comprehensive strategy that supports stakeholders across the entire system: from scientists researching treatments and cures to healthcare professionals ensuring essential medicines reach vulnerable populations. This holistic approach is credited with helping the Gates Foundation save an estimated 80 million lives to date.

Beyond global health initiatives, parts of Gates`s personal capital are also invested in areas like energy innovation and research dedicated to combating Alzheimer`s disease. Other significant focus areas for the foundation include reducing child mortality rates, developing new vaccines such as one for tuberculosis, and numerous other large-scale projects aimed at improving human well-being worldwide. Gates expressed hope that other wealthy individuals would be inspired by his commitment and significantly increase their own philanthropic efforts.
