Obbe Vermeij, who previously served as Technical Director at Rockstar Games, has suggested that the development costs for the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series, potentially GTA 7, could be lower than those for GTA 6.
According to Vermeij, the advancement of artificial intelligence technology is expected to automate a significant portion of the labor-intensive tasks involved in creating expansive game worlds and cinematic sequences.
Vermeij anticipates that within the next five years, AI could take over a considerable amount of work traditionally done manually, particularly in areas such as art generation, environment modeling, and other visual design elements. He stated that these changes would reduce the need for large teams of artists and, consequently, decrease production expenses. This leads him to believe that GTA VII could be cheaper to develop despite its potential scale.
However, Vermeij conceded that the accuracy of his forecast could not be verified for a long time, possibly up to 15 years from now. He also highlighted that GTA VI, due to its largely “manual” development process and immense scope, is likely to remain the most expensive video game ever made.
