HBO Addresses J.K. Rowling Controversy for Harry Potter Series

HBO is not concerned about author J.K. Rowling`s political views affecting the new Harry Potter series adaptation, despite ongoing online criticism from some activists. This was stated by HBO Content CEO Casey Bloys in a recent interview on The Town podcast.

Our decision to work with J.K. Rowling is not new for us. We`ve been collaborating for 25 years.

When asked specifically about concerns regarding Rowling`s views on transgender issues impacting the series, Bloys added:

We already have a show from her on HBO called `Strike` that we do with the BBC. Obviously, these are her personal political views. She has a right to them. `Harry Potter` is not secretly infused with anything [like that]. And if you want to argue with her, you can do it on `Twitter`.

The executive`s comments come in the context of recurring criticism faced by Rowling, particularly from some LGBTQ+ activists. A recent instance involved the author celebrating a UK Supreme Court decision recognizing only biological women as women. This action triggered a renewed wave of boycott calls from some groups and individuals, with some explicitly stating their aim is to ensure “everything related to `Harry Potter` fail.”

Actor Pedro Pascal, known for roles in “The Last of Us” and “Game of Thrones,” was among those who previously criticized Rowling`s stance online, expressing support for transgender individuals.
