International Chess Day 2025: Celebrating the Power of Every Move

July 20th marks International Chess Day, a global observance rooted in the founding of FIDE in 1924. Following the momentous centennial celebration in 2024, which set ambitious goals for the future, the chess world turns its attention to 2025. The central theme for this year is `Every Move Counts,` a reminder of the significance of each decision, both on the 64 squares and in life`s broader landscape. This aligns with FIDE`s ongoing “Year of Social Chess” initiative, dedicated to harnessing the game`s potential for inclusion, education, empowerment, and mental well-being.

Building on the energy of 2024, which saw the chess community set a Guinness World Record for the most games played in 24 hours (surpassing 7.28 million), 2025 aims to continue this momentum with a series of global celebrations and inclusive activities.

Creative Chess Challenge

FIDE issues a call to chess enthusiasts worldwide: showcase your passion in the most imaginative ways possible. This involves playing chess in unusual or symbolic locations – perhaps atop a mountain, underwater (waterproofing presumably required), at a local landmark, or any setting limited only by your creativity. Participate anytime between July 10th and 20th. Share your photographic or video evidence using the hashtag #InternationalChessDay or submit them via email. The goal is to demonstrate the game`s vibrant, fun, and boundless nature.

Global Online Celebration on Lichess

Partnering with Lichess.org, FIDE will host a large-scale 24-hour online blitz tournament. Scheduled to run from 00:00 CEST on July 20th until 00:00 CEST on July 21st, this event features a 5+3 time control and is open to players of all skill levels globally. Participants can join at any point during the 24-hour window and play as many games as they wish.

Entry automatically qualifies players for random prize draws, including opportunities such as:

  • Attending a future Chess Olympiad opening ceremony (with accommodation).
  • Receiving gift vouchers for official FIDE merchandise.
  • Acquiring copies of the exclusive chess photography book “Chess Players.”
  • Accessing group or individual online masterclasses with top Grandmasters.
  • Participating in top-Grandmaster online simul exhibitions.

Promoting Inclusivity Through Over-the-Board

National federations and local communities are strongly encouraged to organize inclusive over-the-board chess events specifically for July 20th. The focus should be on bringing together diverse groups, such as seniors, refugees, youth from underserved areas, or individuals with disabilities. These events serve as powerful demonstrations of how chess can transcend barriers and build meaningful connections. Share your stories and visual content on social media, tagging FIDE and using the relevant hashtags like #FIDESocialChess and #InternationalChessDay.

The Simple Act of Teaching

One of the most direct and impactful ways to observe International Chess Day is by introducing someone new to the game. Whether it`s a friend, family member, neighbor, or colleague, sharing the fundamental rules and joys of chess can ignite a lifelong passion. It`s a gift that truly keeps giving.

Every Move You Make Matters

Whether you choose to introduce chess to a newcomer, organize a local community gathering, participate in the global online challenge, or simply share your personal chess journey, your engagement is valuable. On International Chess Day 2025, let us collectively celebrate the enduring power of chess to educate, connect, and inspire, proving that indeed, every move counts.
