Japanese authorities are expressing doubts regarding the copyright compliance of ChatGPT`s algorithm when it generates images in the style of Studio Ghibli anime. This issue was brought to the forefront during a session of the Cabinet Committee of the House of Representatives.
According to Masato Imai, a representative of Gifu Prefecture and a member of the Constitutional Democratic Party, the resolution of this matter should fall to the courts. He suggested that if the court determines the neural network algorithm merely imitates the style and concept without direct replication, no legal issues would arise. Conversely, if it`s found that ChatGPT`s content relies on a direct dependency from Studio Ghibli`s creations, it would be considered a legal infringement. However, Imai did not specify whether the government or Studio Ghibli representatives intend to pursue legal action.
OpenAI introduced a complimentary image generator within ChatGPT in late March. Subsequently, a viral trend emerged online where users began replacing their social media profile photos with AI-generated images in the Ghibli anime style. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed this phenomenon, urging users to cease such activity due to the immense strain these image generation requests were placing on the AI`s processing GPUs.
