London Students Take Chess to New Heights, Announce Free Community Club

In a move that literally elevated the game, school children recently played chess 52 meters above London on the roof of the iconic O2 Arena. While perhaps the highest-stakes game ever played in terms of altitude, this stratospheric gambit served a greater purpose: launching a new initiative to make the cognitive benefits of chess accessible to more young people in the community.

The symbolic game, played under clear skies by students from The Pointer School, aimed to draw attention to the significant advantages that come with mastering the ancient strategy game. But the real story isn`t just about playing chess on a landmark; it`s about The Pointer School`s commitment to sharing its passion by opening a free after-school chess club for primary-aged pupils in Greenwich and the wider South East London area.

This new club is specifically designed to offer structured chess coaching to young people who might not otherwise have the opportunity. It`s a recognition that while the imagery of a high-altitude game is striking, the most impactful moves are often made on the ground, in local communities, providing tangible resources and support.

The Pointer School, a respected prep school with a 75-year history, boasts a formidable chess pedigree. Former student Shreyas Royal became England`s youngest ever Grandmaster at just 15, and current pupil Kushal Jakhria is set to compete in the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships. The school`s teams consistently achieve success, recently making it to the finals of the EPSCA National Primary Schools’ Championships. This track record isn`t accidental; it`s built on world-class guidance and a deep understanding of how chess cultivates critical thinking, memory, and focus – skills invaluable both on and off the board.

Selection for this community club isn`t based on existing skill level, but rather on passion, potential, and, crucially, curiosity. Spaces are limited, offering dedicated expert coaching and opportunities for competitive play to children keen to explore the depths of the game. From the dramatic setting atop the O2 to the practical, accessible coaching offered locally, The Pointer School is making a clear statement: chess isn`t just for prodigies or private school students; it`s a powerful tool for developing young minds, and they are extending an invitation to the community to discover its benefits.
