Sucker Punch`s creative directors, Nate Fox and Jason Connell, have shared new information about their upcoming action title, Ghost of Yōtei. In a recent interview with Famitsu, they shed light on the game`s non-linear structure and its commitment to historical accuracy.
According to Fox, the central theme of the game is revenge. The protagonist, Atsu, experienced significant trauma as a child and, now an adult, is on a quest to hunt down the “Yōtei Six,” a dangerous group causing widespread destruction across Japan. Players will have the freedom to confront these adversaries in any order they choose, forming the basis of the gameplay`s non-linearity. Fox also highlighted that Ghost of Yōtei will feature the largest and most meticulously detailed map ever created by the studio. Connell added that Sucker Punch is working closely with experts on the historical Ainu culture relevant to the game`s period and undertook a research trip to Hokkaido to thoroughly study the environment, climate, culture, and local customs.
Ghost of Yōtei is currently slated for release on October 2, 2025. Pre-orders are set to open on the PlayStation Store starting May 2. While described as a spiritual successor to Ghost of Tsushima, the game will not share direct narrative connections with it.
