Papich Explains Why Horror Works Better in Games Than in Movies

Content creator Vitaliy “Papich” Tsal recently discussed the horror genre across video games and cinema. He believes that creating the necessary frightening effect is significantly more challenging through film. Tsal shared these thoughts during a stream, a clip of which was later published online.

Responding to a question about whether horror is better in films or games, Papich stated unequivocally that it`s better in games. He criticized the common approach in horror films, often relying on tropes like ghosts or supernatural elements, which he finds lead to predictable and boring plots. He argued that video games offer a superior experience because you, as the player, are in control of the action. This allows you to personally feel the tension of escaping danger or being chased by a creature, making the fear far more palpable and immersive. Papich concluded that games generally implement horror much more effectively, considering film horror often results in a `weak genre` where truly good movies are a rare find.

Earlier, Papich had also shared his impressions on specific films, noting a low rating for the movie “Death Rides a Horse”.
