Ryan Gosling on Why He Joined Star Wars: Starfighter

Actor Ryan Gosling, known for roles in “Drive” and “Barbie,” recently discussed his decision to join the cast of the new “Star Wars” film, titled Star Wars: Starfighter. He shared his thoughts during an interview at the Star Wars Celebration 2025 event in Japan.

Gosling explained that his eagerness to work with director Shawn Levy was a significant factor. Beyond that, he cited a deep, personal connection to the saga: “I`ve wanted to be in this franchise for a long time,” he stated, recalling having “Star Wars” bedding as a child. He described the franchise as having been “always with me, like part of my cultural DNA,” even crediting it with shaping his early understanding of cinema.

He also highlighted the strength of the project itself, emphasizing that “even if you put all of that aside, the film has a magnificent script.” Gosling noted the script`s blend of adventure and heart, its inclusion of original characters, and the opportunity it presents to “shed light on a part of this universe that we may not have seen yet.” He expressed confidence that Shawn Levy is the ideal person to bring this vision to life.

Lucasfilm officially announced the new film within the “Star Wars” universe on April 18th. Titled Star Wars: Starfighter, the movie is scheduled for release on May 28, 2027. Ryan Gosling will take on the lead role, with Shawn Levy (“Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Real Steel”) directing the picture.
