Images of a canceled re-imagining of the original Quake have surfaced online, shared by id Software environment artist Thao Le. These screenshots provide a glimpse into what a modern take on the classic first-person shooter could have potentially looked like.
Le developed the project using the IdTech 5 engine, known for powering games like Rage, The Evil Within, and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. In this reimagined Quake, he utilized assets sourced from the 2016 Doom reboot, resulting in a distinct hybrid visual aesthetic.
Thao Le`s website also features materials from another project that was ultimately canceled: Doom 4: Hell on Earth. At one point, development on this iteration was reportedly quite advanced, including fully realized environments depicting a destroyed city. However, it was ultimately scrapped because Bethesda judged it as not sufficiently aligned with the core spirit of the Doom franchise.
Looking ahead, id Software`s next title, DOOM: The Dark Ages, is scheduled for release on May 15th. This upcoming shooter will transport the Doom Slayer into the past, featuring a setting that shares some thematic resemblance to the world of Quake.
