The Last of Us Showrunner Confirms Four Seasons Plan

The acclaimed series “The Last of Us” is set to extend for a minimum of four seasons. This information was shared by showrunner Craig Mazin during an interview with Collider.

Warning! The following discussion contains spoilers related to the second season of the “The Last of Us” series and the game “The Last of Us Part II”.

There are natural breaking points in the narrative where you can say, `Okay, let`s stop here.` I think there`s a pretty good chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2, simply because the style of storytelling and the opportunities it provides are slightly different.

Joel`s death is such a powerful event. It`s such a narrative nuclear bomb that it`s hard to move away from it; we couldn`t just pause and step aside. I`m not sure that will necessarily be the case for Season 3. I think we`ll have a bit more space there.

But it`s definitely impossible to finish that story in Season 3. Hopefully, we`ll have performed well enough to come back and finish it in Season 4. That`s the most likely outcome.

The series “The Last of Us,” based on the popular video game, first premiered on January 15, 2023. It garnered significant positive reception, with users on IMDb rating it 8.7 out of 10 and on Kinopoisk 7.9 out of 10. The second season was released on April 13, 2025.
