The highly anticipated live-action movie adaptation of Nintendo`s beloved franchise, The Legend of Zelda, has officially set its global release date for March 26, 2027.
This exciting news was first revealed through the newly launched Nintendo Today app, which debuted on both Google Play and the App Store. Announced during the Nintendo Direct presentation on March 27th and released the same day, the app is designed to deliver the latest updates on Nintendo`s games, theme park attractions, and movies. App users were among the first to learn about the Zelda movie`s release date on Friday morning.
First announced in November 2023, the film is a collaborative effort between Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment, who are co-financing the project. Sony Pictures will also handle the movie`s distribution worldwide. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the Zelda series and a renowned game developer, is producing the film alongside Avi Arad, known for his work on the Spider-Man film series and the `Uncharted` movie released in 2022.
While the release is still two years away, a brief teaser has confirmed the global rollout of the film across all regions. Nintendo is reported to be deeply involved in shaping the movie`s storyline and overall direction.
The Legend of Zelda movie follows the success of other Nintendo properties on the big screen. `Detective Pikachu,` starring Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith, grossed $433 million worldwide in 2019. This success was then eclipsed by `The Super Mario Bros. Movie` in 2023, featuring Chris Pratt and Jack Black, which became a massive hit, earning $1.363 billion and becoming one of the top-grossing films of all time.
