Apple is reportedly not planning to implement an under-display selfie camera on its iPhones until 2030 at the earliest. This projection comes from well-known display industry insider Ross Young, who shared the information on X (formerly Twitter).
Young`s update was prompted by a recent report from MacRumors. The report had speculated that the iPhone 19, expected in 2027, would feature a completely bezel-free display with no cutouts. However, Young`s data contradicts this timeline.
According to Young, Apple`s transition to a full-screen front will be phased. He suggests that the Dynamic Island will only be reduced in physical size in 2026. A smaller, dedicated cutout specifically for the selfie camera lens is then expected to remain on the display through 2028. The complete integration of the camera and sensors beneath the display, making them invisible, is not anticipated until 2030.
It`s worth noting that under-display camera technology is not entirely new and has been featured in some Android smartphones for several years, including certain models from the Samsung Galaxy Fold series and Nubia Red Magic phones. However, most current Android devices that minimize display obstructions typically utilize a small punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera, which is significantly smaller than the area occupied by Apple`s Dynamic Island with its sensors.
