Shawn Layden, the former head of PlayStation, has been discussing the blurring lines between the latest generations of consoles and PCs. In a recent appearance on the PlayerDriven podcast on YouTube, he shared his thoughts on the future evolution of video games.
Layden argues that modern consoles are now remarkably similar to high-end PCs. He stated, “The architecture of today`s consoles and powerful PCs is very much alike. Any improvements are so marginal that `only dogs would notice the difference,` as we say. Like, `we have 20% more ray tracing.` Okay, so what?”
Due to this diminishing gap between platforms, Layden has suggested the idea of a unified game format or system. He drew a parallel to the Blu-ray technology for discs. Layden believes that if gamers and the industry collaborated, it would be possible to create a universal format for all video games. This, he suggests, would allow studios to concentrate on content creation, rather than being burdened by technical adaptations for various platforms.
