Video Game Industry Faces Challenges from Trump Tariffs

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) believes that the updated trade tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump will inevitably lead to significant problems in the video game industry. ESA President Aubrey Quinn shared this opinion in an interview with Game File.

According to Quinn, hardware manufacturers, including console producers, will feel the biggest impact. This is due to the fact that such devices use components from many countries, which will significantly increase costs. This will be especially noticeable for the end user. Quinn emphasized that this is likely just the beginning of changes, both for the United States and other countries. At the same time, Trump`s statements that more goods should be produced domestically caused skepticism at the ESA, as restructuring the production chain and creating new facilities will take a considerable amount of time.

The estimated starting price of the Switch 2 at $450 is also attributed to Trump`s new policies. Analysts believe that Nintendo was preparing for changes in advance and factored in a higher cost in case of such a scenario. The Nintendo Switch 2 will feature a 7.9-inch screen with a resolution of 1080p and support for up to 120 FPS. When connected to a docking station, the console will be able to operate at a resolution of up to 4K. The Switch 2 is scheduled to go on sale on June 5, 2025.
