Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., initially launched on PC in January 2025, is now set to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
While SEGA and Rya Ga Gotoku Studio have yet to announce a specific release date, they confirmed key features for the console versions: cross-play support and rollback netcode. These features ensure players can compete across different platforms and enjoy a smoother online experience with minimal lag.
Seiji Aoki, head of the Virtua Fighter project, stated that this console release will include extra content, making it significantly more substantial than just a basic port.
The Virtua Fighter series has a long history, starting in 1993 with its arcade debut in Japan. It arrived on home consoles a year later on the SEGA Saturn. The franchise has since expanded to 24 titles, with a 25th installment currently in development.
Although less popular than competitors like Street Fighter and Tekken, Virtua Fighter is recognized as a pioneer in 3D fighting games, with its early titles pushing technical and graphical boundaries. After a quiet period over the last decade, the series appears to be making a comeback, with Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. launching on major consoles and a new game in development.
