Actress Zoe Saldaña, known for her roles in blockbusters like “Avatar” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” recently shared a unique perspective on her Academy Award statue, stating she considers it transgender. She made this announcement during an interview with People magazine.
When journalists inquired about the location of her Oscar, reportedly won in 2025 for her part in the film “Emilia Pérez,” Saldaña responded, “We keep the statue in my office, and my `Oscar` is genderfluid.” She elaborated, adding that her award is transgender and that she prefers using “they/them” pronouns when referring to it.
“Emilia Pérez” tells the story of a lawyer who assists the head of a drug cartel in transitioning out of the criminal world through gender-affirming surgery. The film received user ratings of 5.4 out of 10 on IMDb and 6.4 out of 10 on the Russian platform Kinopoisk.
The article also noted that “Emilia Pérez” became one of the most significant underperformers in Oscar history at the recent awards ceremony. Despite receiving the highest number of nominations this year, totaling 13 (compared to the winner “Anora” which had just six), the film only secured wins in two categories: Best Song and Best Supporting Actress. Its 13 nominations brought it close to the record of 14 held by films such as “Titanic,” “La La Land,” and “All About Eve.”
Historically, no film has lost more than eleven nominations at the Academy Awards. “Emilia Pérez” now holds a place alongside films with notable loss records, including “The Color Purple” (0 wins out of 11 nominations), “The Turning Point” (0/11), “Becket” (1/12), “Johnny Belinda” (1/12), and “The Power of the Dog” (1/12).
